In My Life

The Beatles Abbey Road Cover

The Beatles always cheer me up when I’m feeling down.  I’ve always said this, and I’ll say it again: “The Beatles were the best thing to happen to the 20th Century.”

There was so much hurt in the first half of the century, with two world wars and the Depression, but then that also birthed the cultural phenomenon that was and still is The Beatles.

I just love their whole story, from their genesis in Liverpool and Hamburg, to Beatlemania, to Psychedelia, to Abbey Road and their eventual break-up.  But their music never dies, and to me it always feels fresh and new.  I often think about their break-up and I agonize over it because I want them to be together and to remain friends always.  I need to believe that they are still friends despite their past squabbles, and I believe that Heaven is a little like them getting back together and playing again.

Here are some lyrics from one of my favourite songs, In My Life (Lennon/McCartney):

There are places I remember
All my life, though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain

All these places had their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I’ve loved them all

But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new

Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more

Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more
In my life I love you more
